Company Profile TTP LabTech's business is about partnering with others in the application of new science to the creation of novel instrumentation and systems. From our base near Cambridge, UK, we design, develop, manufacture and market outstanding solutions for specific and identified needs within the healthcare, pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors.
Innovations in drug development can require innovative manufacturing processes and specialist equipment. As TTP LabTech manufactures its own large and small scale products (from the comPOUND/comPILER store-to-plate processing system down to the bench-top mosquito), it is in a unique position to understand and optimise the process for custom developments.
TTP LabTech has developed process-specific:small-scale manufacturing equipment; commercial-scale manufacturing equipment; 21 CFR Part II compliant control systems and data management.
Process scale up
Process-specific commercial manufacturing equipment is a significant capital investment. TTP LabTech has worked with clients to move from a laboratory scale novel pharmaceutical process to a unique commercial scale machine. A custom small batch machine can form a useful stepping stone, giving an opportunity to develop process knowledge before committing to large scale automation.
We bring a wealth of experience to the process, including: IP management; process research - working with the client to understand their technology's potential; process automation design; equipment design and fabrication; bespoke software
21 CFR Part II Compliance
TTP LabTech has experience in designing 21 CFR Part 11 compliant control solutions for manufacturing equipment. Previous solutions have included: 'paper to glass' machine control; PLC-based control solutions for reduced validation overhead.
Practical Implementation
TTP LabTech provide Functional Specifications, Hardware Design Specifications and Software Design Specifications produced using GAMP4 templates, to facilitate validation and compliance. Assistance can be provided with installation, additional documentation and staff training.

Genome-wide screening
TTP LabTech has announced that Cancer Research UK has recently purchased an Acumen eX3 microplate cytometer to run an RNAi whole genome to identify cytotoxic survival regulators. “Our extended trial of the Acumen eX3 demonstrated it met all of [our] needs. In the immediate future it will enable us to perform very complicated assays measuring 20-30 cell cycle related parameters for every cell in every well of every plate” said Mike Howell of Cancer Research UK’s London Research Institute. “In the longer term we can see applications across a whole range of assays, species and cell types including multiparametric analysis of mixed cell populations, wound healing assays and cell adhesion assays.”

Resonent acoustic profiling
TTP LabTech has announced that it has been granted a licence for the application of Resonant Acoustic Profiling technology incorporated in the RAPid 4 instrument in the areas of drug discovery and life sciences by Inverness Medical. RAPid 4 is a flow-based analysis system which reduces the need to purify samples and generates accurate kinetic, affinity and concentration measurements from complex mixtures, such as blood, serum, cell culture supernatants and periplastic extracts. A stand-alone, fully automated platform, RAPid 4 requires minimal user intervention and is controlled via user-friendly software, typically processing an average of 400 samples per day.

Analytical sample transport
TTP LabTech recently announced the introduction of Lab2Lab, a new automated sample transport system for sending individual microtubes between analytical workstations or laboratories. Lab2Lab uses the proven pneumatic technology at the heart of the comPOUND sample store and a simple network of uPVC tubing to connect a minimum of two stations and transfer samples using a blast of air. These stations can be instruments located in different rooms, or even on different floors of a building. Lab2Lab provides on-demand delivery of a single sample tube to a sampling device, then to the analytical hardware, and then to a waste container or collection point. Lab2Lab reduces the time taken for samples to be sent, analysed and data returned.

Automation roadshow
TTP LabTech have announced a special hands-on laboratory instrumentation roadshow to be held in Basel, Frankfurt and Paris in October 2007. The roadshow offers the opportunity to try out the latest in low-volume liquid handling and high content screening systems with the user’s own plates, as well as learning more about compound management, instrumentation development and custom automation. At each location, the TTP LabTech team of product specialists and application support personnel will be available to provide assistance and advice across a wide range of application areas. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own plates to try on three of the systems to get a real-time, hands-on view of how TTP LabTech instrumentation can enhance their lab’s throughput and quality of results.

Global reach extended
After building up a strong base of customers in the USA and Europe, TTP LabTech have now appointed distributors for Japan (AsOne Corporation, Osaka), India (Wipro Limited, Biomed Division, Bangalore), and Australia/New Zealand (Millennium Science, Victoria). Covering LabTech’s nanolitre liquid handler, mosquito, and their new microplate cytometer, Acumen eX3, these exclusive agreements have already led to multiple sales in these territories. Jas Sanghera, TTP LabTech’s Commercial Director, said “mosquito and the Acumen eX3 both have enviable reputations and are seen as first choice instruments in a number of application areas. With an established customer base in our traditional markets and high capacity manufacturing capabilities, we felt the time was right to expand globally.”
