Company Profile Olympus is a leader in optical and opto-digital technology. As a world-wide renowned manu-facturer of microscopes Olympus offers a complete product range which covers appli-cations from education and routine studies up to state of the art research imaging systems both in life science and material science.
Work environments, areas of application and technical requirements placed upon our light-optical microscopes are all changing rapidly. This applies to material science but primarily to the fast growing field of life science. Molecular biology and gene tech-nology require ever more complicated appli-cations, from the tailor-made stand-alone solution to the high-end complete system. As a market leader in opto-digital technology and as a supplier of one of the widest ranges of microscopes, we have taken up the challenge and accelerate the development of intelligent, cost-effective system solutions. That is why, today, the name Olympus stands as much for modular variety and ergonomics as it does for robust analytical and documentational functions. | |

Entry-level solutions
Olympus has launched the new and improved cell* family range of mutually compatible imaging systems, combining excellent performance with user-friendly operation. The first two members of this family, cell^A and cell^B are entrylevel software packages for image acquisition, reporting and archiving for standard life science applications. The cell^A system is the ideal stepping-stone into digital image acquisition in routine research microscopy whereas cell^B encompasses all of the functions of cell^A along with a host of additional features. This provides a well-balanced imaging system for documentation and archiving in basic cell microscopy.

Total and free PSA assays
Olympus has launched sensitive and precise PSA and fPSA assays for the Olympus AU3000i immunoassay analyser. The use of PSA and fPSA is well established in the screening and management of prostate cancer. Olympus is joining this market with an extremely sensitive PSA assay with a functional sensitivity of 0.015μg/L. A recent multicentre evaluation of the analytical performance of the new Olympus PSA assay on the AU3000i has been undertaken involving the University Hospital Munich Großhadern, the Hospital Nürnberg, and the C.H.U Montpellier. This study has demonstrated that the Olympus PSA assay showed ‘very good functional sensitivity’ and that the assay meets user needs and is suitable for use in the quantitative determination of PSA in human serum and lithium heparin plasma.

Virtual Microscopy
Olympus has launched the new version of its range of dotSlide digital virtual microscopy systems. dotSlide 2.0 offers enhanced functionality and image quality for scanning entire slides at high resolution and fidelity, making them accessible and fully navigable, anywhere on the globe. The three available models (dotSlide MD, manual version; dotSlide SL, fully automated version with slide loader; and dotSlide TMA, with tissue microarray module) now offer more innovative features to enable users to examine virtual slides without being near a microscope, faster and even easier than before. Furthermore, Net Image Server (NIS) SQL expands the dotSlide family with a more flexible and powerful Client Server Database for the management of images and data.

Tele-pathology solution
Olympus has announced the sale of a complete tele-pathology solution to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Cancer Network. The advanced solution combines the properties of the Olympus dotSlide and intraScope systems to provide both real-time and virtual slide analysis as well as discussion capabilities. Olympus intraScope enables direct 1-2-1 control of a microscope from a remote site. This means that a slide that needs to be reviewed for second opinion or remote consultation can be loaded at its source site and the microscope fully controlled by a user at a second site. This enables the reviewer to manipulate the slide and microscope as if they were physically at the instrument. Olympus dotSlide takes this whole process several steps further forward by scanning entire slides at high resolution and fidelity into a virtual slide file, making them accessible and fully navigable anywhere on the globe.

Bio-luminescence imaging
Olympus has introduced the LV200 Luminoview Bio-luminescence microscope (BLM) to its advanced live cell imaging range. The LV200 is a quantum leap in luminescence microscopy and features a highly specialised optical design to maximise light collection, enable dual-colour luminescence, as well as provide brightfield and fluorescence overlays. The first commercially available luminescent microscope, the LV200 boasts full environmental control for long term live cell imaging, providing unprecedented sensitivity and resolution whatever the magnification. The Olympus LV200 Luminoview provides peerless bio-luminescence microscopy imaging for small organisms and slice cultures as well as at the single cell scale.

Structured illumination
Olympus has announced the addition of the new Optigrid M structured illumination system to its life science microscopy range. Optigrid M yields ultra-rich, multi-channel fluorescence and 3D/4D imaging, whilst still using standard illumination. Compatible with Olympus BX2, IX2 adn MVX10 microscopes, Optigrid M controls are fully integrated into Olympus cell imaging software to provide all users with excellent confocallike images. The Optigrid M is an excellent and cost efficient system for expanding the imaging capabilities of new or existing microscopes without taking up valuable laboratory space. Offering coonfocal-like image qaulity, the Optigrid M integrates quickly and easily with Olympus BX2, IX2 and MVX10 microscopes.

Combining technology
Olympus has announced that external performance evaluation has confirmed that the newly launched AU-Connector has excellent operational capabilities. This compact, consolidated system which combines high workload Olympus analysers with Intelligent Sample Management was put to the test by scientists at a busy private laboratory in Munich, Germany. It was evaluated with differing combinations of Olympus analysers, these included two AU2700 clinical chemistry systems together and the combination of an AU3000i immunoassay analyser with an AU2700. In particular it was noted that both AU-Connector hardware and software were easy to operate and that start up and shut down times were superior compared to other integrated systems to date.

New objectives
Olympus has announced the addition of three new UIS2 objectives specifically for cytology applications. Together with the PLN10xCY and PLFLN10xCY objectives introduced last year, the PLN2xCY, PLN4xCY objectives feature built-in neutraldensity (ND) filters, enabling quick changes in magnification without the need to adjust light intensity at all. When employed with the ergonomically designed Olympus BX45 clinical microscope, this series of dedicated cytology objectives offers outstanding images with superior contrast and image clarity. The Olympus PLNCY series of UIS2 microscope objectives are specifically designed for clinical laboratory and examination work in both diagnostics and education purposes.
