Imaging workshop
JPK Instruments is pleased to announce a workshop to be held on Tuesday 2nd December at the Oxford Science Park. This free workshop combines presentations on cutting edge applications and new instrumental breakthroughs from leading research groups and JPK applications scientists. Topics will include single molecule imaging, molecular recognition, cell adhesion/cytomechanics, trapping and tracking nanoparticle interactions. Practical demonstrations and advice on imaging and force spectroscopy techniques will additionally include new technology to quantify single cell adhesion processes and signalling pathways. Speakers from leading research groups will describe their latest developments applying atomic force microscopy, force spectroscopy and optical tweezers techniques.

Expanded product range
JPK Instruments is pleased to announce a completely re-designed website at www.jpk.com. The applications of nanotechnology for use by life scientists continue to expand at a fantastic rate. In the last five, perhaps ten years, there has been a huge shift as companies such as JPK Instruments have developed nanoinstrumentation designed to specifically address the experimental problems from biophysicists and surface scientists to cell biologists and life scientists. The challenge is now to share this information on as wide a platform as possible. JPK’s new web site provides a simple route to learning more about the applications of many different forms of scanning probe microscopy.

Petri dish heater
JPK announces the new petri dish heater solution for live cell imaging using the NanoWizard BioAFM and the CellHesion product lines. It has always been a challenge to develop a dimensionally stable thermal capability for AFM when using plastic components. However, the use of plastics is very much the standard in cell biology with the benefit of being disposable. JPK has overcome this with special mechanical adapters and an intelligent drift compensated design. Plastic and glass-bottomed 35mm diameter Petri dishes from standard suppliers such as BD, Corning and Wilco can be used. The new heater system is fully compatible with JPK’s range of NanoWizard AFM and CellHesion systems. This means all the standard imaging and measurement techniques may be applied at temperatures up to 60˚C with 0.1˚C precision.

Nano optics platform
JPK Instruments’ new NanoTracker optical tweezers and 3D particle tracking system delivers live cell imaging at a new level. With the NanoTracker, the user can trap and track particles from several μm down to 30nm with the ability to control, manipulate and observe vesicles, endosomes, gene and drug spheres, viruses and bacteria, nanoprobes or -carriers, biomarkers or even whole cells in real time with nanometer precision. This opens up new applications in many different disciplines including biophysics, biochemistry, cellular and medical research in microbiology, developmental- and system biology, infection research and immune response, toxicity of nanoparticles and many more.

Force testing solution
With the new CellHesion200, JPK Instruments has created an integrated system for measuring cell-cell and cell-substrate interactions. The CellHesion200 may be integrated with a standard optical inverted microscope in less than a minute to provide the user flexibility and expanding the spectrum of possible control experiments. CellHesion technology provides quantitative and reliably reproducible measurements of the adhesive and stiffness characteristics of living cells. The system delivers precise information about single molecule behavior. Additionally, quantifiable and reproducible data can be produced for a number of important parameters involved in cell adhesion, including single bond partner interactions. CellHesion200 can also be used to determine mechanical characteristics such as cell elasticity or stiffness.
