A smashing improvement
Following the huge success of the Smasher blender from AES Chemunex, exclusive UK distributor Don Whitley Scientific is pleased to introduce a new improved version of the device for use in microbiology laboratories. With all the benefits of the original Smasher, it now comes with quick-release paddles that make it even easier to clean. The innovative paddles can be removed in seconds, without using any tools, to allow easy access for efficient disinfection. With a wide opening door, integrated waste drawer for collection of spillages and rounded corners, the blending chamber can be cleaned with minimal effort. The leak-proof chamber’s robust surfaces are also resistant to chemical damage from cleaning agents. Around 20 times quieter than other blenders, Smasher applies its patented ‘Smash’ effect to quickly crush samples.

For modern microbiology
Don Whitley Scientific is pleased to announce the launch of ASpecT, a fully-automated innoculating and streaking device for the clinical laboratory. The system efficiently processes liquid samples for microbiological analysis using up to nine types of culture media simultaneously. Designed to handle a diverse range of specimen types including bacteriology swabs and urine samples, ASpecT can help busy microbiology laboratories manage increasing workloads. The machine de-caps, innoculates, streaks, labels and then re-caps samples without operator intervention. By managing laborious and repetitive work, ASpecT frees valuable staff resources for more specialist tasks.

Auto barcode labelling
Don Whitley Scientific announces the launch of Labelmaster II – an automated system for labelling and organising culture media samples in clinical, food and pharmaceutical testing laboratories. Designed to print and affix barcode labels to Petri dishes, Labelmaster II helps laboratory staff identify and sort samples quickly, easily and accurately. The pneumatic plate delivery system allows up to 1000 plates per hour to be processed and sorted with improved speed and accuracy. An optional storage unit increases this capacity to 1900 if required. Clear and standardised labelling means fewer mistakes, full traceability of media batches and reduced human error. Tedious and repetitive work is managed and automated to free staff for more specialist tasks.

Temperature monitoring
TomKey, an innovative USB key for recording and displaying temperature, is now available from exclusive UK distributor Don Whitley Scientific. Manufactured by AES Chemunex, the device is designed to monitor the transportation of heat-sensitive clinical and medical samples. Ensuring continuous traceability of temperatures between -40 and +80°C, TomKey is a simple, cost-effective monitoring device. Information such as current temperature, minimum and maximum levels reached and a threshold-exceeded alarm are displayed directly on the integrated LCD screen. With an IP67 rating, the shock-resistant unit is guaranteed to perform reliably even under dusty or wet conditions. Two models are available, storing up to either 8,000 or 16,000 readings.

Precise oxygen control
Don Whitley Scientific is pleased to announce the launch of the Hypoxystation, specifically designed for research requiring normoxic, hypoxic and anoxic conditions. Understanding cellular behaviour in abnormal oxygen environments plays a critical role in the research and development of new therapies for numerous disease states, including cancer. The spacious new workstation allows cells to be manipulated in situ without altering the incubation environment, enabling researchers to replicate conditions comparable to those found in vivo. Oxygen concentrations can be accurately controlled in 0.1% increments from 0.1% up to 20% and carbon dioxide in 0.1% increments from 0.1% to 15%. Along with precise gas control, temperature and humidity levels can also be regulated.
